Billy joined StandFirm through The My Future programme coordinated by Manchester City Council and Manchester College whereby it gives people the chance to complete a 4-week pre-employment training course and a 13-week paid work experience that aims to provide skills, an up to date reference and the support one needs to move into employment. Billy excelled whilst working with StandFirm and impressed European Metal Recycling (EMR); StandFirm’s partner in Salford so much so that they offered him a full time job. Billy shares his story with us.

I had always wanted to join the army after leaving school, but when my dream turned into a nightmare I was desperate to get another job, and I felt that I was a failure. I jumped at the chance to go on the My Futures 3 months placement.

I enjoyed working with the team at StandFirm and they helped me to rebuild my confidence. Being part of a team was a lovely feeling. It was nice to go to Mustard Tree for lunch every day as well and meet people on the Freedom Project and other types of volunteers.

I now feel that I can get my life back on track and look confidently forward to the future, and that I can be optimistic that I really do have a future.

I was offered a job by EMR who are StandFirm’s partner in Salford, and this is a brilliant opportunity for me to work for a big and successful company.  I have already gone on a fork truck training course, and now that I have passed my driving test as well I am hoping to get experience of other vehicles. It’s great to be in this job, I’m over the moon.
