World Homelessness Day
Today, it’s World Homelessness Day.
The 10th day of the 10th month is an opportunity to raise awareness of the plight facing so many people. In fact – if you live or work in Manchester you will have noticed the rise of homelessness in our city.
Between April 2016 and March 2017, more than 5700 people, an 11% increase on the previous year and a 30% increase in families, approached Manchester City Council’s for help –the largest of people and families since 2012.
The numbers are increasing for many reasons such as benefit sanctions, a lack of housing, mental or physical illness, job loss, bereavement, relationship breakdown, addiction, and rent arrears.
Walking through Manchester, you might feel that the future is bleak, but this World Homelessness Day we want to share that there is hope. People can, with the right advice and support, escape poverty and homelessness – for good.
For the 10th day of the 10th month, we will be sharing the stories of 10 inspirational people who came to Mustard Tree and transformed their life.
Please read, enjoy and share.
